Taobao.com to Integrate Group Buying Websites
HANGZHOU, May 18, 2011 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Lately, Alibaba Group Board Chairman Jack Ma revealed the company's intention for B2B business shift at the shareholder meeting held in Hong Kong. Actually, Alibaba has begun restructuring affiliated operations since last year, planning the promotion of its group-buying platform after adjustment.
After spinning off B2C business and changing the ownership of Alipay.com, this week, Taobao.com will change the name of its group buying Web page Ju.taobao.com that was launched in 2010, showing that the company pays high attention to the business.
The group-buying platform of Taobao.com is believed to have greatly influenced the Chinese market since its promotion. However, most analyses have not included the Web site in their statistics.
As a result, Lashou.com is considered as the largest Chinese group buying service provider. The group-buying platform of Taobao.com is certainly unwilling to lag behind.
Actually, since it was spun off from Jianghu.taobao.com for independent operation on March 21, 2010, the group-buying platform of Taobao.com has recorded trading value of more than CNY 600 million per month and ranked number one among domestic peers.
Taobao.com aims to improve the brand influence of the group-buying platform through name change. By far, Tencent Holdings Limited (SEHK: 0700), SINA Corporation (Nasdaq: SINA), NetEase.com Inc. (Nasdaq: NTES) and Sohu.com Inc. (Nasdaq: SOHU) have also forayed into the group buying market. However, their related operations have unsatisfying performance.
Although its surprising data have not won acknowledgement among analysts, the group-buying platform of Taobao.com is not satisfied to be only an industrial Web site. Instead, it plans to become an open platform integrating related service.
Notably, group buying navigation Web sites are generally considered as group buying platforms. For example, the open platform of Internet security software builder Qihoo 360 has access to plenty of mainstream group buying Web sites.
However, insiders believe that group buying navigation Web sites are only collecting and providing information and customers still need to visit the platforms of group buying service providers to complete shopping and payment.
In contrast, the group-buying platform of Taobao.com will form deeper cooperation with other group buying Web sites, through which customers could complete shopping and payment on the platform of Taobao.com.
By far, the group-buying platform of Taobao.com has contacted with Lashou.com, Ftuan.com and 58.com and talked about possible cooperation forms. The latter will use the payment service provided by Alipay.com and share rich user resources from Taobao.com. The group-buying platform temporarily has no plan for profit making.

NSW: "Exemplary nurse" murdered on her own verandah
Eds: Fixes keyword and changes suburb on updated police information
SYDNEY, April 28 AAP - As she arrived home from a day at work, a senior nurse was callously
murdered on the verandah of her quiet Sydney home.
Police believe Michelle Beets may have disturbed a thief who then killed her.
Just before 6.30pm (AEST) on Tuesday two people walking their dog on Holland Street
at Chatswood found the woman dead after seeing a man run from the property.
Police have not officially identified her, but NSW Health has confirmed she was Ms
Beets, saying she was "a valued and esteemed colleague, friend and mentor".
"Michelle Beets, nurse manager of the emergency department, worked at Royal North Shore
Hospital for almost 25 years," it said in a statement.
"She was an exemplary nurse, a dear friend and teammate. We are devastated by her loss."
Police Superintendent Terence Dalton said she had suffered "some particularly callous
injuries which we won't be going into further at this stage".
"Police are seeking the assistance of the public who may have seen a male running from
the scene wearing what was described as a green jacket, possibly a hoodie, and also carrying
a backpack," he told reporters on Wednesday.
Ms Beets, who was aged in her 50s, lived with her partner, who was not home at the
time of the murder but who had since been spoken to by police, Supt Dalton said.
He declined to comment when asked if belongings were missing from Ms Beets or the house.
"It would appear that the attacker could have been disturbed by having people walking
past with the dog, because certainly after the murder has been committed, he has run off,"
Supt Dalton said.
He refused to comment on reports that Ms Beets had been stabbed, or if any weapons
had been found in the area.
He was not aware of reports of screaming at the time of the killing.
"Chatswood is, I would call, a low-crime area," Supt Dalton said.
"It is a good neighbourhood, it is safe and you don't expect this type of crime to
happen in this area."

VIC: Roxon to meet Warley hospital board today
MELBOURNE, Dec 14 AAP - Phillip Island residents' hopes of saving their local hospital
are pinned on a meeting today between federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon and hospital
chiefs.
Warley Hospital, a rural private hospital in Cowes, south-east of Melbourne, is set
to close its 13-bed acute care centre on January 31 because it does not have enough funds
to continue operating.
Health bodies have called on the state and federal governments to assist the hospital,
which provides emergency services to locals as well as tourists visiting to see the island's
wildlife or its motor-cycle racing.
But Ms Roxon has said the hospital will close and that her talks today with hospital
officials will focus on trying to transfer the hospital's 35-bed aged care service to
another operator.
Ms Roxon has said her main concern is for the safety and welfare of the hospital's
nursing home residents.
Originally established as a bush hospital, Warley has operated as a not-for-profit
community facility since 1923.
The small hospital in the town of Cowes has 80 full-time, part-time and casual staff,
including nurses.

Fed: Annual tax return chore may be scrapped
MELBOURNE, April 17 AAP - The annual chore of doing tax returns could be a thing of
the past under a plan being considered by the tax watchdog.
The Inspector-General of Taxation had been speaking to the Organisation for Economic
Co-operation and Development about tax returns in which information about income and deductions
are filled in by tax administrators, Fairfax newspapers reported today.
David Vos said the problem of people not lodging tax returns was "significant".
"We will be reviewing the non-lodgement of returns in Australia and whether it's caused
by taxpayer lethargy or lack of resources among tax agents," Mr Vos told Fairfax.
Australia's tax system is thought to be too complex, with too many deductions, loopholes
and concessions.
Taxpayers in New Zealand and Britain with simple affairs do not have to lodge returns.
One option being examined by Mr Vos is shifting responsibility for filling in returns
back to the Australian Taxation Office.
Under the scheme, the tax office would need comprehensive access to information on
wages, bonuses, severance payments, employee fringe benefits, interest, dividends, assets,
rental income and expenses and even spending on union fees and child care.
At the end of the financial year, taxpayers would be sent their tax return, with the
option of correcting any mistakes and adding overlooked income or deductions.
Mr Vos said in some countries with such systems, up to 88 per cent of lodgements were
processed by tax administrators without any need for changes.

Anatomy of a Killer Site.(Homebuilder.com)(Brief Article)(Statistical Data Included)
WHAT TURNS WEB SURFERS INTO REPEAT SHOPPERS? TAKE YOUR CUES FROM THIS CYBERSPACE WINNER.
SPLASH PAGES ARE FUN, AND IMAGES SELL houses--but content is the real king of the Web. The best sites focus on the customer rather than the site itself. And they cater to new-home shoppers' demands for getting what they need with as few clicks as possible.
One of the most useful services is Homebuilder.com. A part of the Homestore.com family of sites, it provides easy searches (by state and county) for 135,000 model homes and 17,000 builders. With just one or two clicks, surfers can find information on Realtors, custom home builders, and local data, "where to live" guides, and "how to pick a builder" checklists. Prospective buyers can use online mortgage calculators, do cost-of-living/salary comparisons between cities, and research mortgage options.
Besides providing necessary information on pricing, home sizes, and builder credentials, the main pages tell buyers how to prepare for a move, shop for DSL services, and even look for employment in a new area. A useful "Home Buyer's Guide and Index" offers a glossary of housing terms and outlines everything from the tax advantages of ownership to understanding final settlement. Building industry stocks and Internet service data are also posted and updated regularly.
But Homebuilder isn't for buyers only It offers builders links to builder book sites, help with marketing problems, industry news and trends, housing research, and a consultant's guide. With its easy navigation and emphasis on service and usable news, this effective Web site has what it takes to keep shoppers coming back for more.

Is Google going to reboot the way we use PCs? BlackBerry plays catch-up.
If you want to revolutionise computing, you have to be bold. When Apple unveiled the original Bondi-blue iMac in 1998, there were howls of protest at its decision not to include a 3.5-inch floppy-disk drive.
"How are we going to cope?" people whined. "What on Earth is Apple playing at?"
Apple, of course, was right, forging ahead to a bright new future.
Next week, Google will make a far bolder move in launching its first "Chromebooks", made by Samsung and Acer.
The machines, which were made available for pre-order yesterday in the UK, break all conventions. There's no desktop, just an internet browser window, and their functionality is almost entirely dependent on internet access. There is no software to install, just applications running across the internet - and there's nowhere to store your files.
Well, technically there is, but it's not something Google is crowing about because these are machines for the internet age, operating almost entirely in the cloud. Google's operating system, Chrome OS, doesn't just bring cosmetic change, it's beating an entirely new path.
Both the Samsung and Acer Chromebooks are rare in the wild prior to their UK launch, but Google has been touting a preview machine to demonstrate the functionality of Chrome OS.
Its advantages and its drawbacks both centre on its simplicity. If, like me, you're one of the 160 million people who already use the Google Chrome browser, the look and feel of the display will be familiar. Indeed, once you've signed into your Google account, it's as if you were browsing on your other computer, with all your bookmarks, passwords and extensions intact.
This underlines the benign nature of these computers - they're effectively just shells. Sign in to Google using someone else's Chromebook and it'll feel just like yours.
All your work is done in the browser window. Apps are available from Google's Web Store (many of them free) for word processing, diary keeping, e-mailing, photo editing and much else.
The machine feels quick, responsive and relatively immune to viruses, and the battery lasts for a full working day.
But where Chrome OS scores highly for computing novices, it fails for those who demand a little more. Photo editing is a case in point: apps require you to upload your images, work on them in the browser, then download them again when you're done - something that seasoned Photoshoppers will find frustrating.
You can't connect a printer to the machine directly; you have to use Google's Cloud Print service, which sends print jobs to a machine you've nominated that does happen to have a printer connected to it.
The main worry, of course, is that without a connection to the internet or a cellphone network (if you fork out for the 3G option), you're left with a brick of a machine, with your documents and e-mails inaccessible.
There are privacy issues, too, surrounding cloud computing. Google will be vaguely aware of the kinds of things you're up to - but it will probably do a better job of looking after your files than you would, so it's swings and roundabouts.
The main factor dissuading us from going Chrome right now is probably the cost. Samsung's machine is comparable in price to the iPad, and you wonder why you'd opt for an internet caf[c] experience on a laptop over a sleek, touch-n-swipe tablet.
Chrome OS has been hailed as the advent of "cheap, easily accessible computing", and yes, it does feel like a genuinely new approach, right down to the dedicated "search" button replacing that useless old Caps Lock key. All we need now is for a manufacturer to sort out the "cheap" bit.

THE LADY VANISHES! Rachel Johnson is even more brash than her brother Boris. Is that why her husband decided to dunk her in the middle of a primeval swamp?(Features)
Byline: by Ivo Dawnay
WHAT do you do with a woman for whom social interaction is an obsession? Someone who suffers from chronic mention-itis? Who, before one's very eyes, is turning into a brand? You take her on holiday -- a long, long way from Britain.
My wife Rachel, who, if you did not know, is editor of The Lady magazine, happens to be a 'Johnson' -- not so much a name as a condition.
Members of this clan, of which Stanley Johnson is chief of staff, supported by his son Boris, are hugely talented, but their greatest attribute of all is for attracting attention. Several Johnsons suffer from a weird form of attention deficit disorder. They get disorderly when they don't get attention.
Like labradors, they are compelled to jump up with their tails wagging, thereby sweeping sensitive human porcelain off the tables of life. Sometimes, for their own good, they need kennelling.
After a hyperactive few months during which the words 'Rachel Johnson' and 'publicity-obsessed' were spoken in the same breath, I decided that my own Johnson badly needed 'walkies'.
For years, I had longed to see Cartagena de Indias in Colombia. This pearl of the old Spanish Main sits on the North Atlantic coast of South America a few hundred miles from the Panama isthmus.
And the Old Town of Cartagena, is reputed to be the bestpreserved colonial city of them all. Sir Francis Drake liked it so much he sacked it, wringing 100,000 gold ducats out of the locals in the process.
Cartagena is most famous as the setting for Love In The Time Of Cholera, the masterpiece of Nobel prize-winning novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who still keeps a home in the city.
But, for me, its added allure was that Rachel knew no one. Better still, no one knew her.
HOPEFULLY even her smart phone -- evercemented to her palm to provide minute-byminute Twitter reports from the social frontline -- wouldn't work.
We could, I dreamt, wallow in the waters of tropical obscurity. So off we went, heading for a night's stopover in Miami, before our flight on to Cartagena the next day.
To cope with Rachel's social withdrawal symptoms, I indulgently allowed her to set up a Miami dinner with a Caribbean legend, Gordon 'Butch' Stewart, the founder of Sandals, who just happened to be in town.
Then I discovered she had already wheedled a night in the uber-fashionable, newly-opened, seven-star luxurious Soho Beach House. We had a penthouse suite the size of a tennis court.
To my relief, an evening stroll through the bar revealed no one she knew. But at breakfast Tom Parker Bowles, food guru and stepson of the Prince of Wales, strolled over for a chat.
My heart groaned when he recommended a friend on the Spanish Main for us to look up when we arrived. Vamos.
From the air, Cartagena looked hugely promising -- a low-lying walled Old Town with a Miamistyle modern beach strip and a nice celebrity-unfriendly, third world-looking hinterland.
Regrettably, however, Twitter still worked, as did my wife's iPhone, laptop and Kindle -- (useful for checking her books on Amazon).
Our taxi to the Old Town revealed just what I like: an unswimmable, muddy beach, but lots of ancient architecture, narrow streets, bougainvilleabedecked balconies, and large, mahogany doors leading to private palm-treed patios.
And, every few blocks, a glamorous, whitewashed plaza -- unpompous and human-scale with a grand church and a jamboree of bars and restaurants. Oh, and no one we knew.
The people were beautiful, too. Strolling old rogues in Panama hats selling bootlegged Cuban cigars, turbaned West Indian women wearing primary colours, with bowls of pineapple, guava and mangoes on their heads, and flashing-eyed men in wife-beater singlets and hot-pants. Not even a D-List celebrity in sight.
Over the next ten days, we flopped from boutique-hotel to boutique hotel, sampling the relaxed lifestyles of the old Spanish caudillos. We stayed at the impeccable El Marques, the startlingly pretty Ananda and, my favourite, the ancient Casa Pestagua. Each had once been the private home of a colonial grandee and now offered five-star luxury.
SO WHAT to do -- apart, that is, from checking the ME-dia (Rachel's joke for news alerts about herself)? In truth, the sights are the city itself. There is a handful of small museums, a huge castle and a pretty monastery on a hill.
siesta lifestyle, its languid atmosphere, private courtyards and contrasting, explosive, salsapowered nightlife.
After a few days sipping pina coladas -- during which, every so often, Rachel would escape to search the internet for news of rivals -- we allowed the local tourist board to strong-arm us to the Isla Mucura, one of the furthest-flung of an archipelago of Colombian Caribbean islands, an hour or two away by fast launch from the city.
The Punto Faro resort was set on an emerald-green island, past the smaller, but more popular, Islas Rosarios.
Despite charming thatched cabanas and golden sunsets, the customer service and communal eating was more Club Guant anamo t han Club Med. When a 40-st rong new age delegat ion arrived queasily off a sea-t ossed ferry for a spot of mediat ion, we fled back to the city.
Anyway, there was next to no mobile signal.
Guantanamo than dub Med. When a 40-strong new age delegation arrived queasily off a sea-tossed ferry for a spot of mediation, we fled back to the city. Anyway, there was next to no mobile signal.
Still determined to log Rachel off from the stream of gossip pouring from her smart phone, I decided that the most likely place to be truly 'offline' was 140 miles away to our east, lodged in the thick rain- forests at the foot- hills of the Sierra Nevada.
Here, after a hair-raising taxi ride, we arrived at the Tayrona National Park and its Eco- Habs-a grass- hut hotel deep in the forest and surrounded by thundering Atlantic rollers crashing on pristine beaches.
It was heaven. But as we walked with our guide through the forests, Rachel's phone chattered alongside the monkeys in the canopy. You just can't rely on the third world these days.
It was only on our way back to fleshpots and salsa-dives of Cartagena that I finally found my El Dorado - not a city of gold, but a mountain of mud. El Totumo looks more like a factory in a favella shanty town than a tourist attraction.
It is a 50ft-high cone of slate grey, surrounded by shacks selling pine-applesand beer. The social form here might alarm even a Z-list celeb, not to mention the most intrepid anthropologist.
As soon as you arrive, you pay a [pounds sterling]2 entrance fee and are escorted to a changing cubicle where you leave everything (including phones) except your swimming costume. Then you clamber uP 50 muddy steps to the top of the 'volcano'. when you reach the summit, the full horror of what lies In store reveals itself. There before you is, in effect, a mini-swimming pool atop allegedly around 700ft of warm, bubbling, wheezing and ponging mud.
Worse still, floating in it with grins the size of watermelon slices are a couple of enormous, middle-aged Colombian gents. They are smiling and beckoning.
After gingerly stepping down a slippery ladder into this inferno, the greeters whoop and laugh as they pass you across the surface and begin what is less a massage than a kneading process more familiar to bread dough than human flesh. There is a lot of laughter.
And, try as you might, any attempt to sink into the muddy oblivion is as impossible as maintaining any semblance of dignity. The warm mud pops you up like a cork.
After half an hour of this, slimy grey from top to bottom, you stumble down the stairs and walk like a humiliated medieval witch down the shanty street to a nearby lake.
En route, you are hijacked by a pair of crones who wade into the water and proceed to dunk you, demanding you hand them what remains of your swimming togs for them to wash.
We took a couple of days to recuperate back at Cartagena, during which Rachel struck up an inappropriately intimate tennis friendship with Claude Pimont, a dashing, long-haired soap-opera star and friend of former French prime minister Dominique de Villepin. It was time to vamos.
As we headed home, still giggling, it was the delights of El Totumo that stuck like a great, mud-grey stain across our memories.
What was it, we asked ourselves, that made it so liberating?
Was it the wandering hands of the masseurs, the hilarious walk of shame to the lakeside, or just the viscosity of what Flanders & Swann celebrated in their hippo potamus song as 'mud, mud, glorious mud, nothing quite like it for cooling the blood'? Or perhaps it was the knowledge that, with the iPhone in the changing room and the photos unpublishable, it was all - well - a tweet too far.
For a moment at least, phone free, Rachel's ADD and mention-itis had momentarily been washed away by the primeval volcanic swamp.
It is fleeting moments such as these that give me hope.

Adjusted (Non-GAAP) Financial Measures
Sapient provides non-GAAP financial measures to complement reported GAAP results. Management believes these measures help illustrate underlying trends in the Company's business and uses the measures to establish budgets and operational goals, communicated internally and externally, for managing the Company's business and evaluating its performance. The Company anticipates that it will continue to report both GAAP and certain non-GAAP financial measures in its financial results, including non-GAAP results that exclude stock-based compensation expense, restructuring and other related charges, amortization of purchased intangible assets, acquisition costs and other related charges and expense relating to the stock-based compensation review and restatement. However, because the Company's reported non-GAAP financial measures are not calculated according to GAAP, these measures may not necessarily be comparable to GAAP or similarly described non-GAAP measures reported by other companies within the Company's industry. Consequently, Sapient's non-GAAP financial measures should not be evaluated in isolation or supplant comparable GAAP measures, but, rather, should be considered together with its consolidated financial statements, which are prepared according to GAAP.
Safe Harbor Statement
This press release contains forward-looking statements - in particular, the financial guidance for the third quarter of 2009 - that involve a number of risks and uncertainties. Actual results could differ materially from management's expectations. A number of factors could cause actual events to differ materially from those indicated, including, without limitation: the continued acceptance of the Company's services; a reduction in the demand for the Company's services in light of the current economic environment; the Company's ability to accurately set fees for and complete its current and future client projects on a timely basis, successfully manage risks associated with its international operations, manage its growth and projects effectively, successfully integrate and achieve anticipated benefits from acquisitions, and continue to attract and retain high-quality employees; and other risk factors set forth in the Company's most recent Annual Report on Form 10-K and Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q, as filed with the SEC.

SMALL BUSINESSES : CONFERENCE URGES PROMOTION OF INNOVATIVE FINANCING FOR SMES.(Brief article)
A declaration was adopted by representatives of crafts and small businesses, on 17 April, setting out actions they want to see from policymakers to help improve their competitiveness.
One of the main themes addressed in the declaration is education and skills training. The representatives call for entrepreneurship to be included in general and technical education criteria, as well as for improvements in the mutual recognition of vocational qualifications.
The conference also emphasised the need for measures to improve the business environment, including making effective use of the future EU Business Support Network to provide SMEs with easy access to useful information. They also need to be provided with the means to take advantage of business opportunities. Participants called for the promotion of guarantee schemes and micro-credits, and mezzanine finance' techniques combining features of both equity and loan finance. The European Commission has already indicated that it intends to use the declaration in the development of future policy initiatives.
The event brought together a total of around 1,000 delegates, and was used as a forum for dialogue between business organisations, entrepreneurs and decision-makers at European, national and regional level. It was the fourth such conference organised by the Commission, with the previous one held in Milan in 1997. The EU executive also used it as an opportunity to launch its new SME internet portal, which it claims will make it easier for businesses to find appropriate support services. The site is to be available in 17 languages, and is accessible at ec.europa.eu/enterprise/smes/indix_en.htm
