FED: Japan Golden Week bookings up 17 per cent

The managing director of the Australian Tourist Commission says bookings from Japan
for the traditional Golden Week holiday period next month are up 17 per cent.

Mr MORSE says the figures reinforce the Commission's belief that the Japanese market
is recovering.

However he admits it will probably take at least another 12 months before the number
of Japanese visitors is back to the same level prior the Asian economic crisis.

According to the Japan Tourist Bureau , bookings for Golden Week - a period of time
with a number of public holidays - are up 17 per cent.

Mr MORSE says the figures lend support to the idea that Australia is still a dream
holiday destination for many millions of Japanese.
