QLD: Hospital charities can collect cash from public assets

BRISBANE, Dec 22 AAP - Hospital foundations can continue to receive proceeds from public
assets such as carparks and cafeterias after state cabinet resolved a $1.3 million question
posed by the Auditor-General earlier this year.

Health Minister Wendy Edmond today announced hospital foundations, the charities who fund
hospital equipment, could keep the cash.

An Auditor-General's report had recommended the process of transferring the funds be
changed to meet government financial standards and requirements.

"Hospital foundations are a valuable part of the public health system and they have been
receiving funds from the use of public assets, such as carparks, for years," Ms Edmond said.

"Foundations will continue to receive the funds from these types of activities and patients
will continue to benefit from the $1.3 million a year which the foundations invest in
equipment."

Ms Edmond said the cabinet decision took effect immediately and would apply to the hospital
foundations of Ipswich, Cairns, Toowoomba and Nambour hospitals and two Brisbane hospitals,
the Royal Brisbane and the Royal Women's.
